The Kansas City Chiefs are allegedly becoming more optimistic about retaining one of their most key free agents.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Chiefs have “growing optimism” that they will be able to reach an
agreement on a new contract with defensive tackle Chris Jones before free agency begins. The organization has
recognized that retaining Jones is their top priority, and management met with Jones’ agents for two days earlier
this week.
Jones is expected to want a contract worth more than $30 million per year, which would be more lucrative than the
four-year, $112 million extension inked by T.J. Watt with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021.
Jones recorded 10.5 sacks last season and has been a disruptive force on Kansas City’s defensive line, making him
one of the team’s most significant players. Re-signing him will make it extremely tough to retain certain other vital
players, but the team’s desire to keep Jones first and foremost is reasonable.
