The Redskins’ nasty situation with star left tackle Trent Williams appears to be ready to worsen.
According to NFL.com, Williams is not slated to report to training camp this week, and it’s unclear whether he will
show up at all.
Of course, the Redskins should not be surprised by any of this, given Williams’ dissatisfaction with the team during
most of 2019. Williams not only skipped the team’s whole summer workout program, but he also missed the
Redskins’ obligatory minicamp last month.
The conflict between Williams and the Redskins has been simmering for months. Back in June, CBS Sports NFL
source Jason La Canfora said that Williams was so dissatisfied with the team that he promised not to play for them
in 2019. Williams reportedly told numerous teammates that he wanted to be traded or released.
Williams has been dissatisfied with the Redskins for how they handled a critical medical condition he had this
offseason. After the 2018 season finished, a tumor on his head was detected, and physicians were concerned that it
was cancerous. According to NFL.com, the situation was so serious that some teammates were informed that
Williams could miss the entire 2019 season.
Williams had surgery to remove the tumor in February. Although Williams tweeted one photo from his surgery, he
hasn’t said much about the situation, and the Redskins have been tight-lipped.
After Williams skipped minicamp in June, Redskins coach Jay Gruden effectively confessed that Williams’ primary
concern was with the Redskins medical team.
“Trent knows how much we need him and want him back,” he said. “That is the only thing I can do from here.” As for
what transpired with him and the doctors, that is between him and the doctors; hopefully, we can have it resolved
soon.”
Redskins president Bruce Allen was also questioned about the matter in June, and he did not completely reject La
Canfora’s assertion that Williams does not intend to play for the Redskins in 2019.
“I’ve talked to Trent a few times,” Allen remarked. “He’s explained some things to me and I’ll leave it at that.”
