After the 2023 season, Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers fired Joe Barry, their defensive coordinator. The head coach will now conduct interviews with contenders to choose who will lead the Packers’ defense in 2024.

LaFleur is looking for his third defensive coordinator since taking over as head coach of the Packers in 2019. He took over Mike Pettine, a seasoned coach appointed by Mike McCarthy. LaFleir hired Barry after parting ties with Pettine at the end of the 2020 season. Barry lasted three seasons. Getting the next job right will be critical to the young Packers’ continued success in 2024 and beyond.

Staley went 24-24 as Chargers coach, guiding the team to the playoffs in 2022. He was sacked following a humiliating defeat to the Raiders in December. During his one season with the Rams, Staley led the team to NFL-best marks in points and yards allowed. He comes from the Vic Fangio defensive coaching tree.

Quick Thoughts: Runs a similar strategy as Barry. Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey led the Rams’ dominating defense for a year. Despite their talent, his Chargers’ defenses failed to impress.
