This week, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur addressed a key decision regarding his coaching staff’s pre-
draft plans. LaFleur made many statements at the Packers’ press conference on Thursday.
LaFleur’s main statement centered on new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Hafley plans to develop a new
defensive scheme with the Packers’ talented roster. LaFleur also made headlines when he claimed the Packers
poached quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion from the Chicago Bears in January.
LaFleur’s staff will be entrusted with developing a plan for the 2024 NFL Draft in the coming weeks. But LaFleur
made an intriguing selection for the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman reports that
LaFleur and his staff will not attend the combine. LaFleur’s staff attended the combine in 2022 but not in 2023.
The Packers’ general manager, Brian Gutekunst, will be in attendance at the combine.
Matt LaFleur and his staff will not attend the combine this year, like they did last year.
Michael Florio of NBC Sports writes about Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay’s choice not to attend this
year’s combine. McVay basically stated that he is more interested in a player’s tape and evaluating them as a person
than whether or not they can compete in track and field. Florio believes McVay’s response is unpopular within the
league:
LaFleur and McVay will miss the opportunity to meet and get to know players at the combine. That is also a major
component of combine week. The NFL only allows each team to make 30 pre-draft visits per season.
Fortunately for the Packers, Gutekunst will work the event next week. So LaFleur can acquire secondhand
information from his general manager about the combine.
