The mystery of who runs the Redskins front office has finally been answered, and it is not general manager Scot
McCloughan, who was fired.
In a statement, the team revealed that McCloughan had been removed of his duties. The move comes after a
turbulent month in which the Redskins refused to answer any inquiries about McCloughan’s future with the
organization.
McCloughan’s future with the Redskins took a turn for the worse in February, when he was reportedly told not to
attend the NFL combine. McCloughan was also kept out of decision-making as the team prepared for free agency,
which opened on Thursday.
According to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, this leaves team president Bruce Allen in charge. Allen
issued a comment regarding McCloughan’s firing.
“The Washington Redskins have released Scot McCloughan from the organization effective immediately,” Allen
stated in a statement. “We wish him the best in his future undertakings. The team will make no further comments on
his departure. The organization retains confident in our personnel department as we carry out our free agency plans
and prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft.”
When McCloughan vanished from the public eye in February, former Redskins tight end Chris Cooley spoke on a
radio station owned by Redskins owner Dan Snyder and speculated that McCloughan’s very public alcohol issues had
reappeared.
According to a team insider, McCloughan’s alcoholism was a major concern for the organization.
“He’s had multiple relapses due to alcohol,” an anonymous team official stated. “He showed up intoxicated in the
locker room several times. “This has been a disaster for 18 months.”
