The Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason has seen the addition of numerous potential impact players through free agency
and last week’s NFL draft. There were several exits at the start of free agency, including experienced wide receiver
JuJu Smith-Schuster, who left Kansas City after only one season.
After five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith-Schuster was a perfect fit with the Chiefs. He had instant
connection with Patrick Mahomes, finishing the 2022 season with 78 receptions for 933 yards and three
touchdowns. Smith-Schuster recently spoke with reporters, disclosing the reason he left Kansas City for the New
England Patriots.
“Honestly, Bill (Belichick), man,” Smith-Schuster added. “Being at a place where he’s a great head coach, and as far
as everything else goes, I just feel like I fit here.”
Smith-Schuster was a key player of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning season in 2022, but he inked a three-year, $33
million contract with the Patriots this offseason.
“During my five years in Pittsburgh, we met paths several times. I respect his game. One thing I’ve learned from
playing against Bill is that if he ever double-teams you, you’re clearly a valuable player in his opinion. So, when he
did that, I thought, “OK, he respects my game.” He respects me. Being able to return in Year 7 and be here shows
that he still has feelings for me.”
