After losing to the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, the Green Bay Packers were officially eliminated from postseason
contention and will now begin the 2023 season.
The Lions came in with nothing to lose, and head coach Dan Campbell made it clear that his team was determined to
keep the Packers at home for the playoffs.
That is exactly what Detroit accomplished, and unfortunately for the Packers, they are now entering a critical
offseason much sooner than they had planned.
It was a strong end to the season, but the Packers now must make some important offseason decisions. Three guys
who have been vital to this offseason for several years are unlikely to return.
Marcedes Lewis, a 17-year veteran, will most likely retire after this one. Lewis is unlikely to play another year after
the 2022 season, especially given that he will turn 39 in May.
Lewis was recruited to Green Bay five seasons ago to provide a consistent, veteran presence in the tight end group.
However, he was mostly brought in because he is skilled in many aspects of the game, including blocking.
Lewis, a highly regarded athlete for the past decade and a half, has had an incredible career that began with 12
seasons in Jacksonville. He did make one Pro Bowl in 2010, when he caught ten touchdowns, but he’s mostly been a
blue-collar, hardworking tight end who performs a lot of the dirty work.
It’s safe to conclude that 17 years is a phenomenal career, and Lewis is likely to retire soon.
