The Toronto Maple Leafs have welcomed their newest member, Connor Dewar, who they obtained in a trade with
the Minnesota Wild. They got Dewar in exchange for forward Dmitry Ovchinnikov and a 2026 fourth-round draft
pick.
The 24-year-old is regarded as a penalty kill (PK) specialist who can get in on the forecheck and disrupt opponents.
He adds pace, variety, and some snarl to the Maple Leafs’ roster, in addition to what general manager Brad Treliving
has already brought. Toronto needed help with their PK, which has been struggling and currently ranks 22nd in the
league with a 77.5 PK%. Many Leafs Nation members expected a depth forward to be brought in to assist with the
PK; however, we had no idea who it would be. Now that we know, let’s meet the newest Maple Leafs player!
Dewar is from The Pas, Manitoba, and will be the Maple Leafs’ second Métis player after Darcy Tucker. He began his
junior career with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, where he played for four seasons. During his
stint in the WHL, he was quite productive. He scored 18 and 30 points in his first two seasons, respectively, before
taking off in his third. He recorded 68 points in 68 games and carried that momentum into his fourth and final year,
when he produced 81 points in 59 games and was selected by the Wild in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft.
He began his professional hockey career with the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League, where he spent
portions of two seasons. He collected 19 points in 52 games during his debut season in the AHL, followed by 23
points in 32 games in his second year. He succeeded defensively despite the fact that point production was not his
primary focus. He worked hard to develop into a competent defensive forward capable of playing in the NHL’s
bottom six, and as a result, he was given the opportunity.
