The Detroit Lions made some good moves in 2024 free agency, but Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded addition is
probably not who you think.
Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes takes a careful approach to free agency, but in 2023, he was a touch
more aggressive in addressing needs. There was at least one notable miss (cornerback Cameron Sutton), but there
were also several good hits (David Montgomery, Graham Glasgow, Jalen Reeves-Maybin).
Glasgow was a particularly good deal on a one-year contract. Then he had perhaps the best season of his career,
ranking as a top-10 guard on Pro Football Focus. He was honest about wanting to make a little more money when he
returns to the market, but he will most likely be re-signed.
After making the Pro Bowl as a special teamer, Reeves-Maybin received a two-year contract extension. He was also
outstanding when called upon to play defensive snaps.
Montgomery missed three games last season, but he still gained 1,000 yards on the ground and scored 13
touchdowns.
As previously stated, Glasgow was the eighth-highest graded guard by PFF last season, and tied for 16th among all
interior offensive linemen. Reeves-Maybin’s defensive grade, including playoffs, was good (88.9). Montgomery also
scored well among running backs.
With 2024 free agency approaching, PFF has revealed their highest-graded 2023 free agent signings for each NFL
team, based on last season’s grade, of course.
For the Lions, it has to be Glasgow, right?
Montgomery has a 79.6 total grade, topping Glasgow’s 74.9. And that wasn’t entirely because of the change to
running behind Detroit’s offensive line.
