The Pittsburgh Steelers might use an upgrade at quarterback this offseason. And from the looks of it, they have a few
options.
After being linked to a Justin Fields trade with the Chicago Bears, the Steelers have emerged as a frontrunner to sign
Russell Wilson this offseason.
Wilson is set to be released in March, becoming a free agent. This comes after the Denver Broncos opted to sideline
him for the final few games of the 2023 season due to a rumored disagreement over the guarantee triggers of his
contract.
The veteran quarterback, who inked a $242.5 million contract deal with Denver in 2022, has subsequently indicated
that he expects to leave the team before those guarantees go into effect.
With being stated, speculation surrounding Wilson’s likely future team has increased. Despite his struggles with the
Broncos in recent years, he remains a dependable quarterback capable of starting in the NFL.
Interestingly, the Steelers have emerged as the favorites to sign him whenever he becomes available. According to
NBC Sports, Pittsburgh’s odds of signing Wilson increased from +1400 to -110 on Saturday, indicating that it is a
strong possibility.
For what it’s worth, seeing the Pittsburgh Steelers and Russell Wilson team up is an intriguing proposition. Wilson
requires an established system in which to succeed, and Pittsburgh requires a quarterback with championship
experience who can potentially take the Steelers from middle-of-the-pack to title contender.
While Fields could be a good long-term option, his lack of postseason experience and performance at the top level
may be troubling. As a result, Wilson could be a better fit for the Steelers’ short-term aspirations.
