The trading market has been more active lately, with multiple agreements closing during the last two days. The latest
happened over night when Jake Guentzel was acquired by the Carolina Hurricanes from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
On Wednesday, six notable trades were made. Among them were the Buffalo Sabres trading center Casey Mittelstadt
to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for blueliner Bowen Byram, and the Calgary Flames trading defender Noah
Hanifin to the Vegas Golden Knights.
A number of players, including Adam Henrique and Vladimir Tarasenko, who were included on our NHL Trade
Block Big Board on March 1st, have now switched teams. The Ottawa Senators traded Tarasenko to the Florida
Panthers, and the Anaheim Ducks traded Henrique to the Edmonton Oilers.
Notable players like St. Louis Blues forward Pavel Buchnevich, Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom, and New Jersey
Devils winger Tyler Toffoli are still trade candidates despite these early actions. One or more of them might be
switching teams right now.
These are our rankings for the biggest trades made during the NHL Trade Deadline in 2023. A summary and
evaluations of the most significant trades made during the previous two days are also provided.
Prior to this year’s deadline, Tomáš Hertl was not on anyone’s list of potential trade candidates. But in an unexpected
move, the San Jose Sharks sent the 29-year-old center to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for their third-round
picks in 2025 and 2027.
According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Golden Knights sent their 2025 first-round pick to San Jose along with
prospect center David Edstrom. Additionally, Hertl’s average annual worth of $8.1 million was retained by the
Sharks by 17 percent. Given that he is in the second year of an eight-year contract, he is not a postseason rental.
