The trade of Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars has been formally announced by the New England Patriots.
The New England Patriots formally announced Mac Jones’ trade to the Jacksonville Jaguars before of the 2024
season, just a few days after the move was first leaked by NFL sources.
With just “Thank you, Mac” on X (previously Twitter), the team sent their former first-round pick of the Alabama
state off to a harsh reception on social media.
The Patriots issued a brief statement announcing his departure, stating only that they will receive a 2024 draft pick
in exchange and only providing the quarterback’s stats from his three seasons in Foxborough.
The post generated a wide range of responses, the majority of Patriots supporters supporting the decision since they
desired a QB switch. Some even went so far as to say that Jones has given the squad nothing to be grateful for. Some
of the responses included some very funny memes.
Head coach Jerod Mayo and team owner Robert Kraft have not yet responded, and Jones has not publicly discussed
the trade either. Despite a positive beginning, things obviously didn’t work out as planned, and both parties are eager
to move on.
The loss of Tom Brady has obviously left a tremendous hole at Gillette Stadium, and although Josh Jones first
seemed like the solution, the Patriots eventually believed he would not be their franchise quarterback.
In his debut season, the Jacksonville native provided fans cause for hope, leading New England to its first postseason
appearance since Brady’s retirement in 2021. But in the following two seasons, he made significant regressions.
In 2023, the Pats reached a low point when Jones, a third-year quarterback, lost his starting job midway through the
season due to his inability to spark an offense that was having trouble.
The Patriots’ 4-13 record put them at the basement of the AFC East in their worst and final season under Bill
Belichick. Before being benched in favor of Bailey Zappe, Jones completed 224 of 345 passes for 2,120 yards with 10
touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
