By signing former Patriot Jacoby Brissett, most recently of the Washington Commanders, to a deal, the New England
Patriots have bolstered its quarterback room.
According to a rumor from ESPN on Monday night, quarterback Jacoby Brissett, a former Washington Commander
and most importantly, an ex-Patriot, is being signed by the New England Patriots. NFL Network later verified that
the $8 million agreement is for a single year.
In the 2016 NFL Draft, the Patriots selected Brissett in the third round (number 91 overall) to start his NFL career.
The 31-year-old has played in 79 games since then, starting 48 of them. In his first season, he started two games for
the New England Patriots, replacing the injured Jimmy Garoppolo and sitting Tom Brady. He also won a
championship ring when the Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in Super Bowl LI.
During the 2017 offseason, the NC State product was dealt to the Indianapolis Colts. Before moving up to the starting
position following Andrew Luck’s untimely retirement in 2019, he played his first two seasons in Indianapolis as the
backup to both the starter and the reserve, Scott Tolzien. When the organization signed former Los Angeles Chargers
quarterback Philip Rivers in 2020, he was placed back on the reserve roster. He completed 59.5 percent of his throws
for 6059 yards and 31 touchdowns in his four years with the Colts. Along with 500 yards, he scored 11 rush
touchdowns.
Brissett signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Commanders last March following two one-year stints with
the Miami Dolphins (2021) and Cleveland Browns (2022), where he posted then-career-highs in completion
percentage (64.0) and passer rating (88.9). Up until Week 15, when he relieved Washington’s starter against the Los
Angeles Rams, he was Sam Howell’s main backup. Brissett recorded 124 yards on eight passes and two touchdowns
in the fourth quarter, despite the team’s 28–20 defeat. In the next game against the New York Jets, Brissett led three
consecutive touchdown drives to overcome a 20-point hole after Howell was benched for the second time. The NC
State product was outstanding, completing 10 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns, even though the team
ultimately lost 30–28.
