Alonzo Mourning, who posted a picture of the two close friends grinning together on Instagram on Friday, claims
that to be the case.
“Grateful to God this morning!” Writing, Mourning did. “My brother is doing well and recovering! I appreciate all of
your well-wishes and prayers. Prayer is quite encouraging.
The 56-year-old eight-time All-Star and four-time Defensive Player of the Year is undergoing therapy and is being
looked after by a cooperative team of doctors in Atlanta, the NBA said last week.
Mourning has a long history with Mutombo. The two future Hall of Famers played together at Georgetown from
1988 to 1991 under John Thompson before they became teammates on the Nets in 2003. Since then, they have
remained close.
In 2000, Mourning, now 52, was diagnosed with a significant kidney condition. Following transplant surgery, he
successfully recovered and won a championship with the Heat in 2006.
Like Mourning, Mutombo also played for the Knicks for a while and was renowned for his finger-wagging when he
rejected a jumper. He led the NBA in blocks three times and is currently ranked second in league history. Two-time
Defensive Player of the Year Mourning ranks 11th all-time in blocks and twice led the NBA in the category.
