According to Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez, he has fought with injuries over the last two seasons, which may
have contributed to his poor performance.
Tigers fans will undoubtedly hope that this discomfort is the reason he hasn’t been able to take off in the Motor City
and that he will improve in 2024.
After signing a six-year, $140 million contract before the 2022 season, Baez has had a terrible two years in Detroit.
With the Tigers, he’s only hit.230 and has an on-base percentage of.273.
Overall, Baez is a 10-year veteran who has appeared for the Chicago Cubs, Tigers, and New York Mets. He made his
MLB debut in 2014 and helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. Baez is a two-time All-Star, a Gold Glover,
and the past NLCS MVP. He has also received a Silver Slugger Award.
If the Tigers are to maintain their upward trajectory in 2024, Baez will need to play a significant role. After placing
second in the American League Central last season, Detroit has signed Mark Canha, Kenta Maeda, and Jack Flaherty
this offseason.
If all of those contributions pan out and Baez recovers, coupled with hopefully healthy seasons from Casey Mize and
Matt Manning, the Tigers might have another enjoyable summer.
