The Cleveland Browns made an unexpected decision on a free agent that no one anticipated.
Former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley has committed to a one-year contract with the Browns. This
comes just days after the Browns agreed to terms with Jameis Winston.
Huntley joins the Browns following four seasons with the Ravens as Lamar Jackson’s backup. Huntley was selected a
Pro Bowler in 2022 after making only four starts.
After drafting Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Cleveland had four quarterbacks during the offseason last year. Deshaun
Watson, Joshua Dobbs, and Kellen Mond joined him on the roster. With Deshaun Watson returning from injury, it
makes sense to have three quarterbacks ready to go for OTAs and training camp.
It is anticipated that Watson will start throwing this month and be prepared for action in 2024. The Browns have
played just 12 games with Watson in uniform over the past two seasons. The third season will be crucial to their
hopes of getting him back on track.
By signing Huntley, they have an additional quarterback in case their recuperation is hindered and he also provides a
dual-threat capability that complements the offense.
Should a need for a quarterback arise during training camp, Cleveland very well may consider moving Huntley in a
trade. Similar to previous year, when they traded Dobbs to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a fifth-round pick
prior to the commencement of the regular season.
The Browns currently have four quarterbacks that are capable of filling in and providing them with snaps. The
season won’t continue that way, but that far out will need to resolve itself.
