Breaking news: MotoGP have lost another true pioneer legend…
an Australian former MotoGP and World Superbike rider, died at the age of 48.
His mother, Suzanne Gobert, broke the news on Facebook earlier today (17 January 2024).
Ms. Gobert’s Facebook message read: “My heart is bleeding as I write this; my firstborn, beautiful son Anthony, died
late this afternoon. I adored him from the minute he was born till my death.
“He was difficult to deal with at times, but he always had a kind heart and cared about everyone. Unfortunately, he
was a victim of addiction, which runs deep in our family. He tried numerous times to improve, but he couldn’t quite
make it. I am extremely proud of him, and I want to thank everyone who helped make his life better.”
Anthony Gobert died about a week after his family, including his brother Aaron, informed them that he was receiving
palliative care and was nearing the end of his life.
Anthony Gobert will be known by motorcycle racing fans for his tenure in the World Superbike Championship,
where he won eight races and finished on 16 podiums, with a high championship finish of fourth in 1995 with
Kawasaki.
Gobert rose to prominence in Motocross and Supercross, earning a reputation for his harsh riding and remarkable
speed. This career led him to leave the dirt and take to the tracks, and it was a wild card at his home Superbike World
Championship round at Philip Island in 1994 that helped him make his name on the global stage, with a pole
position, a win, and a third place while racing for Anthony Gobert Racing.
