JUST IN: Former Blue Jays top player signs $38.3 million contract with the Red Sox.

Chase Anderson, a right-hander, agreed to a $1.25 million, one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday,

only one day after being released from a minor league agreement by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Anderson’s salary would be $180,000 if he gets relegated to the minor leagues. He may earn $500,000 in major

league performance bonuses for innings pitched: $50,000 for 100, $100,000 for 115, $150,000 for 130, and

$200,000 for 145.

Last year, Anderson, 36, was 1-6 with a 5.75 ERA in 17 starts and two relief outings for Tampa Bay and Colorado.

He signed with the Pirates on February 17 and posted a 2.45 ERA in four spring training appearances, striking out

nine and walking three while keeping opponents to a.135 hitting average (5-for-37).

Anderson has a 59-56 record, 4.35 ERA, and one save in ten seasons. Throughout his career, he has made over 200

starts and 18 relief appearances for the Arizona Diamondbacks (2014-15), Milwaukee (2016-19), Toronto (2020),

Philadelphia (2021), Cincinnati (2022), the Rays, and Colorado Rockies.

To free up a roster spot, Boston placed right-hander Lucas Giolito on the 60-day disabled list. Giolito is set to miss

the season after having his right ulnar collateral ligament repaired with an internal brace.

The organization agreed to a two-year contract with veteran closer Liam Hendriks on Monday, according to ESPN’s

Buster Olney. The agreement is contingent on Hendriks passing a physical.

Hendriks, 35, had Tommy John surgery in August of last year after making only five appearances after recovering

from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hendriks just pitched five innings last season (with a 5.40 ERA), and he’s unlikely

to pitch at all in 2024.

“The real payoff for the Red Sox might occur in 2025,” Olney said in his piece.

Hendriks is the Red Sox’s second pitcher signed this summer who will most likely not pitch this year. The team

already signed Michael Fulmer, who had UCL surgery in October.

Hendriks is a three-time All-Star (2019 for Oakland, 2021 and 2022 for the White Sox). Last year, he won the

American League Comeback Player of the Year award for returning to the field four months after being diagnosed

with cancer. His career began with Minnesota in 2011, and he joined the Royals in 2014. He was traded to Toronto

before the 2014 deadline and stayed with the Blue Jays in 2015. He pitched with the A’s from 2016 to 20 before

spending the last three seasons with the White Sox.
