It’s all official! Yesterday, Tottenham Hotspur announced late on deadline day that they had agreed to recruit 17-
year-old Lucas Bergvall from Allsvenskan side Djurgarden, moving him away from Spanish superpower Barcelona.
On his birthday, the club officially announced his signing. He will join Spurs on a five-year contract on July 1, 2024,
for a reported sum of €10 million plus options.
This is amazing not only because we are signing one of the most talented and hyped young players to emerge from
Scandinavia, but also because we did so by essentially grabbing him from under Barcelona’s nose. Spurs had been
watching him for some time, but they really stepped up their efforts once Barcelona manager Xavi announced his
retirement at the end of the season. That, combined with Barcelona’s need to search the Nou Camp couches for spare
coin in order to register players for the following season, altered the transfer calculus.
By late yesterday, the Bergvall family had left Barcelona unsure about their next move, and it was “50/50” for either
team. Before the window closed, he had made his selection, and it was Tottenham.
Bergvall is only getting his first taste of senior top division football this season, but he is a special talent who has the
potential to be a superstar if he develops properly. And he’ll get his chance right away, as Ange Postecoglou expects
for him to join the first squad immediately next season.
Bergvall joins a group of young, promising U20 players at Spurs who have the ability to transform the club over the
next few years. These players include Alfie Devine, Ashley Phillips, Alejo Veliz, Jamie Donley, Alfie Dorrington, Will
Lankshear, and Dane Scarlett, as well as Mikey Moore and Tyrese Hall in the U18s. Bergvall could be the greatest of
them all.
