It would take a lot to persuade the Patriots, or any other team, to reveal which prospects they like ahead of the 2024
NFL Draft.
Matt Groh, the Patriots’ director of player personnel, and Camren Williams, the college scouting director, spent the
week in Mobile, Alabama, watching and visiting with many of the Senior Bowl participants. At the event, they
chatted with the team’s website and highlighted one of the important features they intend to launch in April.
“You should have explosive players. “You look at the teams that are playing deep into the playoffs, and they have
explosive players, whether on the perimeter, in the backfield, or at tight end,” Groh told Patriots.com. “The quickest
method to get points is via explosive plays. You do it by having explosive players and someone who can get them the
ball.”
It is simple enough, but the Patriots have been without offensive potency for half a decade. Kendrick Bourne and
Jakobi Meyers have both flourished in New England, but the rest of the team’s wide receivers since 2020 have been
unimpressive, if not downright poor. That is why there has been a focus on identifying explosive wide receivers.
“The big piece a lot of times is the testing results because that’s such an athletic position,” Williams told reporters.
“What they run in the 40, how they jump, their hands, and all those things in the pro day and workout settings,
that’ll be a big piece to it.”
However, the Patriots would not pick third if their sole issue was at wide receiver. It’s evident that New England is
looking for a new quarterback, but there are also voids to fill on the offensive line, especially if both of their starters
from last season leave in free agency.
