An Open Letter from David Peterson to Tony Gonsolin, Fans, and the Entire New York Mets Community
Dear Tony, Mets Fans, and the New York Mets Community,
I hope this message finds you all in good health and high spirits. I write today with a heart full of gratitude, respect, and reflection as I navigate a significant chapter in my journey with the Mets. From the moment I put on that uniform, I knew I was stepping into a legacy far bigger than myself—a legacy that embodies resilience, determination, and a love for the game that runs deep in the veins of every New Yorker. I want to take this opportunity to share a few words with you all, especially to my fellow pitcher, Tony Gonsolin, and all the incredible supporters who make this team what it is.
First and foremost, Tony, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the mutual respect we share as athletes. You’ve built an impressive career with the Dodgers, and it’s clear that your work ethic, composure, and competitive spirit have earned you a place among the top pitchers in the game. The way you approach each inning, your dedication to your craft, and your resilience through adversity have been an inspiration to me. In a game as challenging as baseball, it’s players like you who push us to be better every day.
On the field, we are fierce competitors, each vying to help our respective teams claim victory. But off the field, I believe we share a mutual understanding of the hard work, sacrifices, and challenges we face as professional athletes. We both know what it means to put in countless hours of practice, fight through injuries, and face moments of doubt. It’s a journey that very few truly understand. I have no doubt that in future matchups, we will continue to bring our best, pushing each other to rise higher in every game we face.
To the fans, I owe so much to each and every one of you. The energy you bring to every home game, the chants, the cheers, the encouragement during the tough times—this community is unmatched. There are few fanbases that show the passion and unwavering support that Mets fans do, and for that, I am eternally grateful. I’ve felt the weight of those expectations, but I’ve also felt the immense pride of knowing that I am representing this team, this city, and this community. You’ve stood behind me through every start, every pitch, and every inning, and I will never take that for granted.
In a season filled with highs and lows, I’ve learned that the journey is as important as the destination. Yes, there are moments of triumph when you feel like everything is falling into place. But there are also the tough moments—the struggles, the setbacks, and the days when things don’t go the way you planned. It’s in these moments that the true character of a team and its players are forged. I have immense faith in this team’s ability to bounce back, to overcome, and to never give up on the goals we’ve set.
To the New York Mets organization, thank you for the opportunity to wear this uniform and represent the storied history of this team. The lessons I’ve learned from my teammates, the coaches, and everyone in the Mets family are invaluable. I’ve grown as a player, and more importantly, as a person during my time here. There’s no greater honor than being a part of this incredible tradition.
Finally, I want to remind everyone that baseball is a team sport. While individual accomplishments are celebrated, it is the collective effort, the camaraderie, and the shared vision that make all the difference. As I continue to grow and develop, my goal remains the same: to help this team reach its highest potential and bring a championship back to New York.
Thank you, Tony, for being a worthy competitor. Thank you to the fans for your unwavering support. And thank you to the entire New York Mets organization for making this journey so meaningful.
Sincerely,
David Peterson
