Remembering Angie Stone: A Tribute to a Queen

Wow. It has taken me a couple of days to fully process the news, but the impact Angie Stone had on my life and the music world is undeniable. I had the privilege of knowing this queen since the very beginning of my own true musical journey. She walked into my life as I was searching for a background singer and sax player for my first club tour, and from the moment she stepped into that audition, I knew I was in the presence of greatness. It wasn’t just her talent that stood out; it was the energy she brought with her, an energy that was rare and special.

We did a tour together, and during that time, we became family. She was from down south, just like me, and that connection was immediate. She reminded me so much of my grandmother and her people, who were from a small town in Georgia. There was something about her presence, the way she carried herself, that felt like home. We bonded over our shared love of music, humor, and, of course, southern cuisine. Angie knew how to cook, and she cooked with an unmatched joy. She knew her food tasted better than anyone else’s, and let me tell you, it did. Every meal she prepared was a celebration. The flavors, the love she put into every dish—it was a reflection of who she was: warm, giving, and unapologetically herself.

One phrase Angie would always say that stuck with me was, “Lenny, I am overly confident.” It wasn’t just a catchphrase—it was a reflection of her belief in herself and her abilities. Angie truly believed in her greatness, and I believe it too. From the moment we met, I could feel her energy. She was destined for something big. It wasn’t long before the world knew exactly what I saw in her. Angie Stone went on to become a household name, the Queen of Neo-Soul.

While Angie had already had an illustrious past in music—being a member of the legendary group Vertical Hold and working behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer—it was her solo career that solidified her as one of the most important figures in music. This was Angie’s time. She was no longer just an industry secret. The world was now introduced to the powerhouse that she was, and it was clear that she was changing the face of music. Angie was the voice and the vision of Neo-Soul. Her sound was unique—rich, soulful, and real. And when she sang, you felt every note. She didn’t just perform; she transported you to another place. She was a master vocalist, a skilled producer, an incredible arranger, and a musician who truly knew how to make magic in the studio.

Angie’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. As a black woman in the music industry, she faced numerous obstacles. She was told she wasn’t the right age, that she didn’t have the “right look,” but none of that ever stopped her. In fact, it only fueled her fire. Angie busted through every barrier that tried to hold her back, and she did it with strength, grace, and undeniable talent. She proved that talent and authenticity would always shine brighter than any external expectations. And shine she did. Angie Stone created some of the most iconic music of the era, and those songs will remain in the hearts of millions forever.

I was fortunate enough to play on some of those great recordings, and they are treasures to me. Every time I listen to her music, I am reminded of the time we spent together, the incredible woman she was, and the mark she made on the world. Those moments we shared—whether on stage or in the studio—will live with me always. Angie’s legacy is not just in the music she created but in the person she was. She was an inspiration to us all, a true queen in every sense of the word.

To Angie’s family—Diamond, Michael Jr., and everyone who loved her deeply—I extend my deepest condolences. My heart goes out to you all. Angie was a rare and beautiful soul who touched the lives of everyone she met. I am forever grateful to have known her and to have shared in her journey.

Rest in peace, Angie Stone. You are missed, but your music, your spirit, and your legacy will live on.
