When you’re a talented team like the San Francisco 49ers, who continue to have one of the top coaching staffs in the
NFL, there’s likely to be turnover from year to year. Last year, the 49ers lost defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans to
the Houston Texans, where he accepted a promotion to head coach.

The 49ers parted ways with Steve Wilks this offseason after being disappointed by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas
City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. While Wilks has extensive experience, including stints as an NFL head coach, one of
the 49ers’ new hires has as well.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler, the San Francisco 49ers have promoted defensive passing
game specialist Nick Sorenson to defensive coordinator, where he will also call plays.
Sorenson will be joined by former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, who will take on an
undetermined position. His responsibilities could include becoming the team’s new assistant head coach.
After finishing his ten-season playing career in 2010, Sorenson transitioned into coaching and has been with the
49ers since 2022. He will now be charged with leading one of the NFL’s finest defenses. However, having Staley by
his side should help Sorenson’s transfer go lot more smoothly.
