Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, has spoken about how the team will deal without Chris Jones.
Jones’ future with the Chiefs has been the focus of discussion in recent days as the 2023 NFL regular season approaches. On Thursday night, the reigning Super Bowl winners take on the Detroit Lions in the season opener.
However, due to a contract dispute with the Chiefs, Jones appears to be out of the lineup for the game. The defensive tackle has not practiced and, as a result, is a huge worry for the game against the Lions.
Jones, 29, has been punished for each practice session he has missed this summer as a result of his refusal to participate. According to reports, Jones is negotiating a new contract with the Chiefs, but there is no indication that an agreement will be struck in time for Jones to start the season on the field.
Mahomes has been Jones’ teammate during their time in Missouri. The two-time MVP was asked what the impact of Jones’ absence on the field would be if it occurred this week against the Lions.
“At this point, you just prepare to play the game with the guys in the building, and let the front office and stuff handle that,” Mahomes told reporters on Sunday, according to NFL.com.
“But we have a huge test against the Detroit Lions. We’re going to attempt to focus on how to win with the players who are here.”
Mahomes also stated that he will not get involved in any contract disputes involving his Chiefs teammates, instead emphasizing the ideals that have made the Chiefs his home since he was drafted.
